Care Sheet

Breed Origins

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s history dates back to 19th-century England, where they were developed by crossing bulldogs with small terriers. The goal was to create a strong, agile, and courageous dog for sporting contests of the time.

When these blood sports were outlawed, the breed’s affectionate temperament made them ideal family companions. Responsible breeders refined the Staffy’s loving nature while retaining its trademark bravery and athleticism.

Appearance & Physical Traits

Staffies are compact, muscular, and powerful, with a distinctive broad head and expressive eyes.

  • Size: 11–17 kg; 33–41 cm tall.
  • Coat: Short, smooth, and easy to maintain.
  • Colours: Brindle, black, blue, fawn, red, white, or combinations.
  • Distinctive Features: Broad chest, muscular build, rose or half-pricked ears, and a confident stance.

Temperament & Personality

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are devoted, affectionate, and people-oriented.

They thrive on human companionship and form incredibly strong bonds with their families.

They’re energetic and playful, yet surprisingly gentle and patient with children when socialised properly. Staffies can be a little too enthusiastic at times, so training from puppyhood is important to channel their energy in positive ways.

Training & Socialisation

Staffies are intelligent and eager to please, making them responsive to consistent, reward-based training.

Training Tips:

  • Use positive reinforcement — they respond well to praise and treats.
  • Keep training sessions short, fun, and engaging.
  • Early socialisation with other dogs, people, and environments is essential.

Without proper training, Staffies may develop unwanted behaviours such as jumping up or pulling on the lead.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Staffies are active, muscular dogs that require at least 1–1.5 hours of exercise daily.

Best Activities:

  • Walks and runs
  • Tug-of-war and fetch
  • Agility and obedience training
  • Play sessions with their family

They enjoy being involved in all aspects of family life — from weekend adventures to lounging on the couch.

Grooming & Maintenance

Staffies are low-maintenance when it comes to grooming.

  • Brushing: Weekly brushing to remove loose hair and keep coat shiny.
  • Bathing: Every 6–8 weeks or as needed.
  • Other Care:
  • Clean ears regularly.
  • Brush teeth several times a week.
  • Trim nails every 3–4 weeks.

Health & Lifespan

Staffies live 12–14 years and are generally healthy but can be prone to:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Skin allergies
  • Cataracts
  • Patellar luxation

Maintaining a healthy weight and regular vet visits will help prevent common health issues.

Diet & Nutrition

A balanced, high-quality diet is essential for this muscular, energetic breed.

  • Adults: Two meals per day.
  • Puppies: Three to four smaller meals daily.
  • Recommended Diet: High-protein kibble or raw diet with vet guidance.
  • Avoid: Overfeeding — Staffies can gain weight easily if not exercised.

"Staffies? Big hearts in a stocky frame. Loyal as they come, but if you play tug with one, don’t expect to win." – Grumpy Old Max 🐾
