Care Sheet

Breed Origins

Groodles were first bred in the 1990s in North America and Australia, inspired by the success of the Labradoodle.

The aim was to combine the Golden Retriever’s gentle, friendly nature with the Poodle’s intelligence and hypoallergenic coat qualities.

Today, they’re cherished worldwide for their versatility, making them popular as pets, service dogs, and emotional support animals.

Appearance & Physical Traits

Groodles are athletic, well-proportioned, and charmingly scruffy in appearance.

  • Size: 50–66 cm tall, 15–35 kg (depending on Poodle parent size).
  • Coat: Wavy to curly, often low-shedding.
  • Colours: Cream, gold, apricot, red, chocolate, black, or parti-colour.
  • Distinctive Features: Expressive eyes, fluffy ears, and a friendly smile.

Temperament & Personality

Groodles are gentle, loving, and social.

They get along well with children, strangers, and other pets, making them one of the most family-friendly breeds.

Their intelligence means they learn quickly, but it also means they need mental stimulation to prevent boredom.

Training & Socialisation

Training a Groodle is usually a delight due to their eagerness to please.

Training Tips:

  • Use positive reinforcement and reward-based methods.
  • Keep training sessions short and varied.
  • Start socialisation early to ensure they’re confident in different environments.

They excel in obedience, agility, and therapy dog work.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Groodles have moderate to high exercise needs.

Best Activities:

  • Daily walks, runs, or swims
  • Fetch and tug-of-war
  • Agility and obedience training
  • Brain games and puzzle feeders

A mix of physical and mental stimulation keeps them happy and well-behaved.

Grooming & Maintenance

While Groodles are low-shedding, they require regular grooming to keep their coat healthy.

  • Brushing: At least 3–4 times a week to prevent matting.
  • Professional Grooming: Every 6–8 weeks for trimming.
  • Other Care:
  • Regular ear cleaning (to prevent infections)
  • Nail trimming every 3–4 weeks
  • Brushing teeth several times a week

Health & Lifespan

Groodles are generally healthy with a lifespan of 10–15 years.

Potential health concerns include:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
  • Allergies and skin sensitivities

Choosing a reputable breeder who health tests is essential.

Diet & Nutrition

Groodles thrive on a balanced, high-quality diet suited to their size and activity level.

  • Adults: Two meals daily.
  • Puppies: Three to four smaller meals daily.
  • Recommended Diet: High in protein with healthy fats for coat health.

Avoid overfeeding — Groodles can gain weight if under-exercised.
