French Bulldog
The Charming, Affectionate, and Adaptable Companion
French Bulldogs, or “Frenchies,” are one of the most popular small dog breeds in Australia — and it’s easy to see why.
With their bat-like ears, compact size, and loving personality, they are well-suited to urban living and make excellent companions for singles, couples, and families alike.
They are affectionate, loyal, and generally easy-going, thriving on close bonds with their owners. While small, Frenchies have big personalities and a surprisingly playful, clownish side.

Breed Origins
The French Bulldog’s history began in England during the 1800s, where small bulldogs were popular among lace makers in Nottingham. When the industry moved to France, these little bulldogs went with them.
Crossbreeding with local terriers produced the French Bulldog we know today — a small, muscular, and charming companion dog that quickly became a favourite among Parisian society.
Appearance & Physical Traits
French Bulldogs are compact, muscular, and distinctive in appearance.
- Size: 8–14 kg; 28–33 cm tall.
- Coat: Short, smooth, and low-shedding.
- Colours: Brindle, fawn, cream, white, pied, and rare colours such as blue and lilac (though some rare colours can carry health risks).
- Distinctive Features: Large bat-like ears, flat face (brachycephalic), and a short, stocky build.
Temperament & Personality
Frenchies are affectionate, playful, and charming.
They love being the centre of attention and are known for their sense of humour.
They bond closely with their families, get along well with children, and often enjoy the company of other pets.
They are not typically excessive barkers, making them ideal for apartment living.
Training & Socialisation
French Bulldogs are intelligent but can have a stubborn streak, so training should be consistent yet positive.
Training Tips:
- Use reward-based methods with treats and praise.
- Keep sessions short and engaging.
- Start socialisation early to build confidence and prevent clinginess.
While they’re not high-energy dogs, mental stimulation is still important to keep them from becoming bored.
Exercise & Activity Needs
Frenchies have moderate exercise needs — around 30–45 minutes a day is enough.
Best Activities:
- Short walks
- Gentle playtime indoors or in the yard
- Puzzle toys for mental stimulation
Caution:
Because of their flat faces, French Bulldogs are prone to overheating. Exercise them during cooler parts of the day and avoid strenuous activity in hot weather.
Grooming & Maintenance
Frenchies are low-maintenance when it comes to grooming.
- Brushing: Weekly brushing to remove loose hair.
- Bathing: Every 4–6 weeks or as needed.
- Other Care:
- Clean facial folds regularly to prevent infection.
- Keep nails trimmed.
- Brush teeth several times a week.
Health & Lifespan
French Bulldogs typically live 10–12 years.
Health considerations include:
- Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome (breathing difficulties)
- Skin fold dermatitis
- Hip dysplasia
- Eye problems (cherry eye, cataracts)
Choosing a reputable breeder who health tests for common issues is vital.
Diet & Nutrition
A balanced, high-quality diet helps maintain a Frenchie’s health and ideal weight.
- Adults: Two meals daily.
- Puppies: Three to four smaller meals per day.
Avoid: Overfeeding — French Bulldogs can gain weight quickly, which can worsen breathing issues..

Max’s Comment
"Small dog, big attitude, and even bigger snore. But one look from those big round eyes and you’ll forgive them for hogging the bed."
