Kelpie
The Tireless, Intelligent, and Loyal Working Dog
The Australian Kelpie is one of the hardest working and most intelligent dogs in the world.
Renowned for its stamina, loyalty, and trainability, this breed was developed to handle the harsh Australian climate and endless outback terrain while herding livestock.
Today, Kelpies still thrive as working dogs but also excel in active pet homes where they can channel their boundless energy into sport, training, and play.

In the right home, they’re affectionate and form strong bonds with their families.
However, without sufficient stimulation, they can become frustrated and develop unwanted behaviours.
Training & Socialisation
Kelpies are among the easiest breeds to train for experienced owners but require consistency and engagement.
Training Tips:
- Use positive reinforcement with plenty of praise and rewards.
- Keep sessions short, frequent, and mentally stimulating.
- Early socialisation helps them adapt to urban environments if they’re not on a farm.
They excel in obedience, agility, herding trials, and canine sports.

Kelpies are extremely high-energy dogs needing at least 1.5–2 hours of exercise daily.
Best Activities:

They’re not suited to sedentary homes or small apartments unless exercise needs are met.

- Other Care:
- Regular nail trimming
- Weekly ear checks and cleaning
- Brushing teeth several times a week
Health & Lifespan
Kelpies are generally robust and healthy, living 12–15 years.
Potential health issues include:

Kelpies need a diet that supports their active lifestyle.
- Adults: Two meals daily.
