Can Dogs Eat Beans?
If you are like me, your pets are like your own children.
Be careful though, you cannot feed your dog the same way you feed your children.
Your dog’s digestion system is very different from a human’s digestive system.
To keep your dog happy, healthy and worry-free you must understand what food is good for your dog and what can cause them serious harm.
So, can dogs eat beans?
We know you should never feed your dog tomatoes, chocolate and nuts.
However, before you feed beans to your dog there are a few essential things you should know to ensure you don’t harm your ‘fur’ child.
Beans are one of the more controversial products to feed your pet and are often regarded as prohibited.
But are they actually dangerous for your dog’s digestive system and well-being?
Let’s have a look!
Beans are a great source of protein, minerals and magnesium and it’s important to remember that the best source of protein for your dog is meat.
There are many health benefits related to beans. They are a good source of vitamin C and K, and some provide antioxidants which help decrease cholesterol and fight cancer cells and arthritis.
Like anything, beans (or legumes) should be consumed in moderation. Taken in large numbers can be harmful and may cause your dog to suffer from stomach pain, excessive gas and other harmful conditions.
As well as discussing, can dogs eat beans, we'll look at the types of beans which are best for your dog.
Are There Healthy Beans for Dogs?
Boiled beans, including black, soy or pinto beans, are non-toxic, which means they will not harm your dog. It is generally believed you should feed your dog only green beans, but this is not entirely true. A safe, nutritious meal which includes cooked lentils or lima beans will provide all the adequate nutrients and minerals you need to have a happy, healthy pooch.
Ensure, however, they don’t include any additional spices or fats.
Very importantly, never mix the food you have prepared with pre-prepared, or canned dog food.
Black Beans
Black Beans, like most legumes, contain a high amount of protein, fiber and vitamins C and K. If boiled or soaked overnight black beans provide a healthy meal for your dog and helps regulate blood sugar and strengthen their immune system.
Never give your dog raw beans, canned beans or spices of any kind.
Lima Beans
Lima beans provide your dog with a healthy requirement of iron, fiber and protein and they are low in calories. Even after a small meal, the fiber in lima beans will give your dog that full feeling. They are also ideal supplement if your dog suffers from diabetes.
Chickpeas
Chickpeas are high in dietary fiber and are an incredible source of protein. A small meal of Chickpeas relieves hunger and will give your pooch plenty of long-lasting energy.
Be aware not to give your dog the same bean dishes you prepare for yourself. Hummus, for example, is a dish we all like but is completely unsuitable for your dog!
Never feed your dog canned beans!
Canned beans include preservatives, usually salt, which are harmful to your dog’s digestive system.
If you need a ‘pooch snack’ while you are travelling and you only have canned beans you can remove the salt, or most of it, by rinsing in large amounts of water.
Chickpeas are great as a snack ground into porridge or mixed with meat or vegetables.
But make sure you do not add vegetable fats or seasonings and avoid spices, onion and fried snacks! They are all toxic to your dog!

Are Green Beans good for my dog?
Green Beans, or String Beans
Green beans are definitely the healthiest and safest of the legumes you can give your dog. And they love them!
Fresh or frozen beans are great. You can steam them, boil them or put them in the microwave, your dog will love you for it!
Make sure they are not canned!
Kidney Beans
Kidney beans are high in antioxidants which help protect your dog from disease.
It’s very important you do not give Kidney beans to your dog without cooking them first!
Raw Kidney beans contain toxins which are very dangerous to your dog!
Ensure you boil the beans before serving them to your dog and it’s best to provide them as a ‘side’ dish with their meal.
Pinto Beans
Pinto beans are a definite yes!
Add them to brown rice and meat, and dog will be begging for more!
They are full of protein and magnesium and are low in fat.
Pinto beans are arguably one of the best meals you can provide to your beloved pooch!
But again, make sure you boil them, don’t use spices and don’t use raw or canned beans!
So, can dogs eat beans?
Generally, yes, but make sure you understand how to prepare them and if you are still unsure consult your local Vet.
